Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a tea cocktail
Cinco de Mayo is here! On this day many will pay homage by eating Mexican cuisine, and butchering some Spanish phrases.
For those looking to enjoy the holiday from a cultural standpoint, there exist lots of intriguing parts of the Hispanic culture including their herbal teas. Mexico actually has several teas special to the region that can help to restore or to celebrate. So we thought we would share a fresh tea cocktail recipe that includes tea of course!
You are going to need: green tea, rum, soda water, mint, limes & sugar.
Step 1. First create a simple syrup by adding a cup of water and a cup of sugar along with half a sliced cucumber. Heat in a frying pan until the sugar is dissolved, then leave to cool before straining out the cucumber. That's ingredient one ready.
Step 2. Then you need to brew your tea, we selected our Green Sunshine variety which is a grassy green tea with earthy lemon flavours. Take a double serving and brew with nearly boiling water for 3-4 minutes. Then place in the fridge to cool, then ingredient 2 is ready.
Step 3. Now to combine a squeeze of lime (half a lime to be exact) with some fresh mint leaves then muddle to release the natural oils. Then squeeze the other half the lime and add a couple of shots of rum.
Then take both your syrup and green tea and add in equal measures of both. Give it a light shake.
Step 4. Serve over ice with a splash of soda water, extra cucumber, mint & lime. We have sugared the glass rim to create a sweet sip to pair with the refreshing taste.
You can play with the ratio of syrup to tea depending on your taste, just keep it cool and topped up.
Then only thing to do now is repeat the process and share.
